Are you in the mood to get outside, explore, and stay active during your vacation? If so, check out the outdoor activities in Whitefish and explore the beautiful mountain town of Whitefish, MT.  It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit this beautiful area; there is always something to do here.

Glacier National Park

The pride and joy of this area is by far Glacier National Park. This amazing and breathtaking national park is one of the most widely-visited places in the entire United States — and the entire world. Located just 25 miles from downtown Whitefish, Glacier National Park is one of the top Whitefish, MT activities that features numerous outdoor activities, such as picnics, kayaking, canoeing, running paths, hiking trails, and cycling trails.

Glacier Park features Going to the Sun Road, a bucket list road that features expansive views over the surrounding lush green pine forests, large green patches, bright blue glaciers, and jagged peaks. You can also head here in the winter to go snowshoeing or cross country skiing on one of the manicured snow paths that wind their way through the pine trees in the wilderness.

Plus, Glacier National Park offers mountain bowls, 700+ miles of trails, and dozens of backcountry trails and camping options that are perfect for true adventurous souls who want to get out in the heart of nature, see flora and fauna, and push their limits.

If you are only in Whitefish for a short time, we recommend driving the 50-mile Going to the Sun Road with a rental car, heading to Two Medicine in the eastern side of the park to check out the free-flowing waterfalls, summiting Chief Mountain early in the morning, and fishing at The North Fork.

Check Out Les Mason State Park

For another outdoor state park that is a bit closer and less expensive than Glacier, check out Les Mason State Park. This beautiful nature area is calmer and less wild than the national park, but still features tons of outdoor activities for a half-day or full-day trip. We love hearing from her and going to the beach to bring a picnic lunch and chill out after a long hike or run. Then, you can jump off the platform in the water, take a kayak out on the gentle waves, or bring your binoculars for bird watching.

Watersports

The spring and summer are popular times to visit Whitefish, so it is no wonder that this incredible nature area has tons of sports and Whitefish, MT activities that you can do by yourself or with your friends. We recommend heading to Flathead Lake to go fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, stand up paddleboarding, canoeing, or swimming. There are tons of rental businesses too, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own fishing gear or watercraft.

Cycle Along the Whitefish Trail

The Whitefish Trail is one of the most popular long-distance pathways that is perfect for flat cycling, marathon training, or multi-hour hikes with your furry friends. We recommend going to the Lion Mountain Trail close to the downtown area of Whitefish that is perfect for short day trips close to your accommodation. We love this easy loop that provides you with a scenic viewpoint of the bustling town down below. If you would rather go somewhere a bit farther from the other tourists, we think that the Beaver Lake trailhead is your best bet.

Buy Some Fresh Produce at the Whitefish Farmers Market

The Whitefish Farmers Market is a vibrant market that is great for buying fresh vegetables, fruit, and snacks that you can bring on a nearby picnic in the great outdoors. Head here any time on Tuesday evening between 5 pm and 7:30 pm to enjoy the food vendors, fresh produce, and farm-to-table stalls. You can rest assured that everything you buy here is organic!

Have a Few Pints at Bonsai Brewing

Last but not least, we think that going to bonsai Brewing for a post-exercise brew and some snacks is the best way to end the day! After a long hike in Glacier National Park, full day of kayaking on the lake at Les Mason Park, multiple hours of cycling on the Whitefish Trail, or wandering around the Whitefish Farmers market to pick up some healthy produce, we love going to Bonsai Brewing Project to try their rotating craft beers on tap.

And the best part? You can bring your pup! Head here and bring your dog to sit outside, sip on some fresh IPAs, and meet like-minded neighbors.
