Kick off the summer right with a fun and exciting vacation in a small-town atmosphere. When you choose Whitefish for your Memorial Day getaway, you won’t be short on fun activities to fill your time and keep everyone happy. Whether you want to spend time indoors or outdoors, you’ll find something to fill the bill every day you spend in Whitefish.
The adults of the group will love a stop at Unleashed Winery. They offer a full menu of red, white, and sweet wines made right on the premises. If you’re wondering about the name, it’s a nod to the owner’s roots as an animal care technician and life-long dog lover! Many of the wines even carry dog-themed names. You’ll be able to take part in a wine tasting event complete with locally sourced appetizers to pair with the wines while you listen to live music performed by local artists. Don’t forget to purchase a bottle or two to enjoy during a home-cooked meal at your rental. Please wear a mask when not eating or drinking.
Enjoy the beautiful Montana scenery on your Memorial Day respite. Gather your group and lace up your hiking shoes and point your compass to just outside of downtown Whitefish. The Whitefish Trail, a community collaborative project with the Whitefish Legacy Partners, offers walkers, runners, hikers, bikers, and even equestrians the opportunity to follow the trail that winds through over 40 miles of public and private lands for a unique view of the area. The trail is made up of scenic overlooks, single-track trails, gated logging roads, and loops. Keep an out of for local wildlife in their natural habitat.
You’d be wrong if you think you need a train ticket to get inside. The Whitefish Museum is housed in what used to serve as the train station of the area. Instead, you’ll step into the history of Whitefish. The museum includes loads of railroad paraphernalia, along with many other displays and exhibits. Make note of the large tree stump outside the museum doors – an homage to the city’s former name of “Stumptown” and a reminder of the city’s past as a logging town before the railroad made its appearance. Tap out a message in Morse Code, or learn about local author Dorothy M. Johnson who wrote classics like “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and “The Hanging Tree.” The museum is open Monday-Sunday 11-3 and is free, but a donation to the Whitefish Historical Society, the organization that maintains the museum, is appreciated.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first International Peace Park – a designation earned by the collaborative agreement of the US and Canada in 1932, Glacier National Park is only 27 miles from Whitefish. You’ll find beautiful scenery, wildlife, and plenty of hiking trails for a long breath of fresh mountain air, 25 named glaciers, and over 1,000 species of plant life for an unforgettable outdoor experience.
Your Memorial Day adventure may be greeted with cooler temperatures, so splashing around in the waters of Flathead, Swan, Tally, or Whitefish lakes may be something a little further down the list of experiences. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sun and stretch out on the beaches for some sun or a picnic. If you must get in the water, some lakes offer water activities like paddleboarding, jet skiing, swimming, and more. If you plan to swim, City Beach is the only one of these beaches with a lifeguard on duty.
Take the laser tag fun outdoors in Whitefish. Reserve a two-hour game with Flashpoint Outdoor Laser Tag, a local and woman-owned business that provides fun and unique laser tag experiences in the great outdoors of Whitefish and the Flathead Valley. Be prepared to maneuver through heavily wooded areas around the location, hiding behind natural obstacles as you try to move undetected to score against your opponents. The staff at Flashpoint recommend coming dressed for battle: closed-toed shoes, long pants, and long sleeve shirt you don’t mind getting dirty to protect against the elements, bugs, and foliage. COVID-19 precautions include sanitized equipment for each participant and CDC-recommended distancing.
