Glacier National Park

There’s not much more of a patriotic activity than spending time in a national park this 4th of July. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first International Peace Park, a designation earned by the collaborative agreement of the US and Canada in 1932, Glacier National Park is only 27 miles from Whitefish. Take in beautiful scenery and wildlife, hike the trails, and more while you take a long breath of fresh mountain air. See 25 named glaciers and over 1,000 species of plant life during your visit.

Fourth of July Golf Tournament

If the golfers of the group packed their clubs, they may want to make plans to join in the 85th Annual 4th of July Tournament at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club. The event runs July 1st through 3rd at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club. The entrance fee is $240 for non-members of the club and advance registration is required.

The Whitefish Trail

Get some exercise during your 4th of July respite. After you’ve celebrated the red, white, and blue, gather your group, lace up your hiking shoes, and head just outside of downtown Whitefish. There, you’ll find the Whitefish Trail. Walkers, runners, hikers, bikers, and even equestrians follow the trial that winds through more than 40 miles of public and private land for a unique experience of Whitefish’s natural beauty. It’s made up of stacked loops, scenic overlooks, single-track trail, and gated logging roads. Make sure to bring your camera, for the views as well as spotting local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Fishing

Check out the many lakes in the Whitefish area where you can cast a line and see what’s biting. After you obtain a Montana fishing license, rent some gear, and wander down to the shoreline on your own, or head out on a guided charter tour. There are many different species of trout, as well as northern pike, smallmouth bass, and others that you can enjoy for lunch or dinner after your outing. You might just catch dinner for your 4th of July cookout.

Alpine Slide

Make sure your 4th of July fun includes a stop at Whitefish Mountain Resort and its Alpine Slide. You can imagine yourself a Winter Olympic athlete on the US team in the luge event as you zoom around the track on a wheeled sled. The slide’s one-third-mile long track is full of banked turns, dips, a tunnel, and winding paths under some bridges. You control the speed with a hand brake, or you can simply let the track take you. Children under 48” tall are free but must ride with a paying adult.
