Once you’ve chosen Whitefish for your 4th of July red, white, and blue fun-filled break, you won’t be short on activities to fill your time. From fireworks to festivals, there’s some sort of patriotic fun to fill your time during your Montana escape. While you plan your list bursting with fun and exciting and patriotic activities, don’t forget to book a vacation rental with I Love Whitefish.

Beaches

Your 4th of July adventure to Whitefish should include at least a day at the beach. Splash around in the waters of Flathead, Swan, Tally, or Whitefish lakes, enjoy the sun, and stretch out on the beaches for some sun or a picnic. Enjoy a walk on the beach or watch the kids play. If you get in the water, some lakes offer activities like paddleboarding, jet skiing, swimming, and more. If you plan to swim, City Beach is the only beach with a lifeguard on duty.

Fishing in Whitefish

Check out the many lakes in the Whitefish area where you can cast a line and see what you can catch. After you obtain a Montana fishing license, rent some gear and wander down to the shoreline on your own, or head out on a guided charter tour. There are many different species of trout, as well as northern pike, smallmouth bass, and more you can enjoy for lunch or dinner after your outing. You might just catch dinner for your 4th of July cookout by fishing in Whitefish!

Whitefish Arts Festival

Celebrate America and Whitefish on the same weekend. Attend the 43rd Annual Whitefish Arts Festival, happening July 1st through 3rd. The event is sponsored by Whitefish Christian Academy and includes many high-quality arts and fine crafts from local artists as well as those from around the country. Enjoy metal sculptures, paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, home décor, and more. All goods are handmade. There is live music on the 1st and 2nd from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and music from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd. Keep your belly full with good eats from local and other food vendors from throughout the state. The event takes place at Depot Park and admission is free.

Fourth of July Golf Tournament

If the golfers of the group packed their clubs, they may want to make plans to join in the 86th Annual 4th of July Tournament at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club. The event runs June 30th through July 2nd at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club. The entrance fee is $240 for non-members of the club and advance registration is required.

Glacier National Park

There’s not a much more patriotic activity than spending time in a national park this 4th of July. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first International Peace Park, a designation earned by the collaborative agreement of the US and Canada in 1932. Glacier National Park is only 27 miles from Whitefish. Take in beautiful scenery and wildlife, hike the trails, and more while you take a long breath of fresh mountain air. See 25 named glaciers and over 1,000 species of plant life during your visit.

The Whitefish Trail

After you’ve celebrated the 4th with a BBQ or picnic, get some exercise during your 4th of July respite. Gather your group, lace up your hiking shoes, and head just outside of downtown Whitefish to the Whitefish Trail. Walkers, runners, hikers, bikers, and even equestrians follow the trail that winds through more than 40 miles of public and private land for a unique experience of Whitefish’s natural beauty. Follow the stacked loops, scenic overlooks, single-track trail, and gated logging roads and burn off the calories. Make sure to bring your camera, for the views as well as for spotting local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Alpine Slide

Make sure your 4th of July fun includes a stop at Whitefish Mountain Resort and its Alpine Slide. Imagine yourself a Winter Olympic athlete in the luge event as you zoom around the track on a wheeled sled. The slide’s one-third-mile-long track is full of banked turns, dips, a tunnel, and winding paths under the bridge. You control the speed with a hand brake, or you can simply let the track take you on a wild ride. Children under 48” tall are free but must ride with a paying adult.
