Imagine for a moment, if you will, walking along a dirt path as you listen to the twitter of birds play you a forest symphony. You stop for a moment and glance around at the towering pines that surround you, their tall trunks and gnarled limbs stretched out high above you like wooden giants placed there to guard this sacred wooden path. If reading this has put a calm into your mind, read on about the type of Whitefish hiking journey one can have in the beautiful and serene Whitefish, Montana!

The Trails – Whitefish Hiking

At Glacier National Park, you’ll find a multitude of trails; in fact, one could hike a different trail every day for a year, and you still wouldn’t have completed half of them! For instance, there is Lion Mountain Trail which features a 2.6-mile out-and-back trail with beautiful views of the lake and forest which surrounds the trail. Even better, this hike is easy, dog friendly, and close to town. However, if you are looking for something a bit longer and tougher, you might want to check out Danny on National Recreation Trail, which offers an 8.6-mile out-and-back hike featuring a strong elevation gain as you trek up what was once a ski slope during the winter months. The beauty of this hike is you get breathtaking views of Whitefish and beyond, but you don’t have to hike back down, or up, as the chairlift offers easy access to the peak! You can also take the time to explore the ever-popular Whitefish Trail, which is heavily forested, making it the perfect place if you are looking to get out in nature. As well, it offers pristine views of the lake and is dog friendly, ensuring even your furry little friend can enjoy all the beauty of the Montana forests. If you are looking to learn a bit about the area while also getting away from the city, make sure you check out the Living Wetlands Interpretive Trail, which offers 14.7 acres of protected wetlands for you to hike and explore. What’s more is you’ll find the occasional sign giving you a deeper insight into the complex ecosystem you find yourself adventuring in.

A Trip Around a Loop and to a Lookout

If you’re looking for a particularly beautiful trail that also is known to be a good place for nature watching, head over to Round Meadows Trail. This 5.9-mile loop trail features a twisting and winding path with wildflowers painting the ground that cuts through the forest as it follows a coursing stream. Keep your eyes peeled, as many people reports sightings of bald eagles, white-tailed deer, fawn, wild geese, and even wolves and grizzlies! The best part is that at certain times of the year, you don’t even need to pack a lunch thanks to a plethora of ripe berries to eat along the way. You can also check out Swift Creek Loop if you’re looking for more of a nature walk. This 1.4-mile loop is perfect for all skill levels and provides a pretty overlook of the lake; even better, the loop is nicely shaded, making it good for an afternoon walk. Finish the day off with a trip to the Whitefish Valley Lookout, which features a good middle ground, 2.8-mile out-and-back hike which boasts lots of wildlife to keep you company as you gaze upon Whitefish and the surrounding countryside from above. You’re sure to find this quick, easy, and well-maintained lookout trail both tranquil and beautiful.
