Lost in the Past With These Activities in Whitefish

As the rain falls relentlessly, soaking the grounds and doing its best to keep our landscape green and healthy, you will remain dry and warm as you explore the charms found inside the Conrad Mansion Museum, located at 330 Woodland Avenue in nearby Kalispell. Built in 1895, the mansion was once home to the Conrad family, a wealthy family headed by Charles Conrad who earned his fortune as a freighter and trader and with his wife Lettie by his side, built their dream home in Montana’s mountains. Today, guests can tour the mansion, either guided by docents dressed in period garb or with a self-guided tour that can last as little or as long as you need it to be. The rooms are all preserved to look as they must have during the Conrad’s times, and even if you do not take the docent tour, you will still be able to check out the fashions of those days as many of the rooms contain mannequins also dressed in period guide! Oh, and if all this fabulous pioneer display of wealth is not enough to garner your interest, maybe learning that Teddy Roosevelt once slept inside the bricked walls of the mansion may be all you need to start planning your visit!

Florida’s year-round sun and warmth is what makes it the ideal getaway no matter what time of year you’re looking to get away. It also means virtually pristine weather and conditions for your early summer escape. You’ll enjoy time on the beach, whether it’s a leisurely stroll on the beach or you’re setting up for a day of basking in the sun and working and your tan or swimming in the shimmering waters of the Gulf of Mexico and more. Local Floridians know the best places to enjoy a fun-filled early summer break that includes activities on 30A for young and old, on water or for land lovers.

Beaches

Whether your trip is just a quick few days or a couple of weeks, you will definitely want to make time to hang out at the beautiful beaches along 30A. Pack the cooler and your beach gear and prepare for fun on land or sea. Sunbathe on the beach or take a walk with loved ones. When the weather’s right you’ll want to take a dip in the Gulf, for a swim or to explore the underwater world with a mask and snorkel. Take a lesson or rent some gear for activities like stand up paddleboarding, snorkeling, or kayaking. You can even gather your group for a horseback ride down the beach.

Fishing

One of the easiest and most fun activities for your whole group. Fishing is an activity that has no age or skill requirement and can be a full-day or partial day journey. There are several experiences to choose from, including inshore, nearshore, and deep sea fishing. Some charter companies even take you to the flats, inlets, feeder creeks, bayous, and more for fly fishing. They also welcome young anglers and some offer lessons. Cast a line in search of lunch or dinner in the form of redfish, tarpon, speckled trout, flounder, snapper, and more. Ask your chosen company about night fishing or add an extra thrill when you go shark fishing.

Snorkel and SCUBA Tours

Tap one of the many companies along 30A for tours that extend your nature and wildlife viewing below the shimmering blue and green waters for the Gulf. Get close to bottlenose dolphins, sharks, manatees, rays, sea turtles and a variety of fish species can be seen. Ask about daytime or sunset tours, as well as gear rental for when you’ve built your confidence and want to strike out on your own.

Escape Rooms

As one of the most popular activities in the last several years, escape room facilities are popping up all over the country. Rooms are rated by difficulty and even come with age and group size suggestions, so you can choose the right adventure for your group. Enjoy themes like death row break outs, Navy SEALs, and castle escape, and others that will stretch your logic and sleuthing skills. Most escape rooms give you 60 minutes to solve all the clues and break out to win, so quick thinking and teamwork are a must.

Dune Lakes

Florida is one of just two states in the U.S. and five total places around the world where coastal dunes are a natural geographic feature. Dune lakes are typically shallow, irregularly shaped permanent bodies of water that are brackish and dark-colored due a mix of both salt and freshwater sources. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard for some fun on the water, purchase a combo freshwater/saltwater fishing license, or just relax and enjoy the day on the shoreline.

Hiking

As spring heads toward summer and the weather heats up, you’ll want to save this activity for the early morning or evening and stay out for a shorter period of time. The 30A area is dotted with state parks and hiking trails for hours of outdoor fun. Pack your sun gear, water, and trail snacks and head out to experience the land-based natural beauty of 30A. While you’re out in the wild, keep a lookout for local wildlife, including black bear, coyotes, deer, and osprey, to name a few.

Beaches

Early summer fun means a visit or two to the beach. City Beach, Flathead Lake, Swan Lake, Tally Lake, and Whitefish Lake all offer great opportunities for swimming or lounging on the shore. Some offer paddleboarding and other water sports like jet skiing and boating. If you’re worried about inexperienced swimmers in your group, head to City Beach – the only beach with a lifeguard on duty.

The Whitefish Museum

Spend some time indoors and learn about the place you picked for early summer relaxation. From the outside it may look like a train station, but inside the historic building you’ll find the history of Whitefish. The old town train station is home to the Whitefish Museum and includes lots of railroad paraphernalia and many other displays and exhibits that bring the town’s history to life. Before you enter, you’ll notice the large tree stump outside the main doors, an homage to the city’s former name of “Stumptown” and a reminder to guests and locals alike of the city’s past as a logging town before the railway came through. Explore hands-on exhibits and tap out your own message in Morse Code, and learn about local author Dorothy M. Johnson who wrote classics like “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” and “The Hanging Tree,” among others. Stop by Monday-Sunday 11-3. Admission is free, but a donation to the Whitefish Historical Society is recommended and appreciated.

Flashpoint Outdoor Laser Tag

A fun, outdoor activity the whole group, laser tag challenges your skills and offers plenty of fun. This local and women-owned business provides laser tag experiences with the added challenge of the obstacles in the great outdoors of Whitefish and the Flathead Valley. The two-hour experience takes place in the heavily wooded areas around the location. You’ll want to come prepared for outdoor battle with closed-toed shoes, long pants no matter what temperature it is outside, and long a sleeve shirt to protect against sun, bugs, and foliage. Don’t wear anything you don’t want to get dirty! COVID-19 precautions include sanitized equipment for each participant and CDC-recommended distancing between staff and players as well as players not from the same group. Call for reservations.

The Whitefish Trail

Gather your family, lace up your hiking shoes, and head just outside of downtown Whitefish. There, you’ll find the Whitefish Trail. Walkers, runners, hikers, bikers, and even equestrians follow the trial that winds through over 40 miles of public and private land for an unmatched experience of Whitefish’s natural beauty. It’s made up of stacked loops, scenic overlooks, single-track trail, and gated logging roads. Bring your camera, for the views as well as spotting local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Children under 48” tall are free but must ride with a paying adult.
